Managing dependencies within a team and across multiple teams is always a challenge. As is often the case, a member of one team is blocked by something that is being worked on by another team. In Favro this means identifying and tracking dependencies between one card and another card or multiple cards. The Attach Favro cards, boards and backlogs feature allows you to do this by creating two-way dynamic links between a card and other cards, boards or backlogs.
How to indicate a dependency by attaching a card to another card
Once a dependency is identified, it’s a good idea to mark the blocked card by using a card color, typically red, or a Blocked tag. To call out what’s causing the block, open any card and click Attachments > Favro cards, boards and backlogs. Search for the specific card you’d like to link. Once the card is linked it will appear as an attachment on both cards. This attachment can be clicked to jump back and forth between cards. The attached card also shows exactly where it lives on other boards and backlogs.
This same method is used to link a card to a board or backlog, indicating a more general dependency between one team’s work and another team’s work. A card can have multiple card, board and backlog attachments. Each attached board or backlog shows all of the collections where it resides and, when clicked, the option is given to jump directly to your collection of choice.
How to link a board or backlog to a card
From the board or backlog menu (⋮), select Options > Attach Favro card. Search for the card you’d like to attach. Once attached, a link icon will appear on the board/backlog header and a corresponding link will appear within the card pop-up.
How to track dependencies from the backlog
In the backlog, activate the “Favro attachments” column. Once activated the column will show attachments for each backlog card. Along with the attachment name, the current board and board column will be displayed. This lets you easily track exactly where a blocking card lives on another team’s work board, directly from the backlog.
Other uses of Attach Favro cards, boards and backlogs
Along with handling dependencies, there are many other reasons you might want to use Attach Favro cards, boards and backlogs. Some of these include:
Show any relationship between one card and another card or multiple cards
Link a backlog to an epic card, showing the breakdown from epic to user stories
Link a board to a user story card, showing the breakdown from the user story to tasks
